Everlywell STD Test reviews: are home STD tests accurate?

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), also known as sexually transmitted infections (STIs), are fairly common in the U.S. and often go unnoticed. It’s recommended that anyone sexually active be tested for STDs at least once a year to stay on top of their sexual health and get treatment if necessary. Untreated STDs may have long-term health complications, so staying up-to-date on your sexual health is important. At-home STD testing makes it easy to stay informed and protect yourself and your partner, all within the privacy of your own home.

Frequently asked questions

Why take an STI/STD test?

Routine STI/STD screening can help you detect sexually transmitted infections that you may not even have symptoms for. If left untreated, STDs have the potential to cause long term and more significant health issues, including pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), bladder problems, infertility, and more. Getting tested at least once a year is the responsible thing to do for the health of yourself and your partner(s).

Who should take an STI/STD test?

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends that all sexually active people get tested for STDs at least once a year. Specific recommendations can vary depending on risk factors, but most medical professionals agree that testing should be done after engaging in unprotected sex with any new partners. Some common symptoms of STDs include:

  • Vaginal discharge with an unusual odor or color
  • Genital warts or sores
  • Flu-like symptoms
  • Pain or burning sensation during sex or while urinating
  • Pain or swelling in the testicles
  • Itching around the genitals

You don’t have to be experiencing symptoms to be eligible for an STD/STI test, as some infections may be asymptomatic.

What are some risk factors for STIs and STDs?

There are some factors that may put you at a higher risk of contracting an STD, such as:

  • Age: According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), 15–24 year olds account for half of all new sexually transmitted infections.
  • Biological sex - Young people assigned female at birth are more biologically susceptible to many sexually transmitted infections than those assigned male at birth at the same age.
  • Sexual behaviors - Certain behaviors, like having unprotected sex, can heighten the risk of contracting a sexually transmitted infection.
  • Substance use - Among sexually active people, using drugs or alcohol is linked with a greater likelihood of contracting a sexually transmitted infection.
  • Sex partners - The risk of getting an STI increases the more sex partners you have and if you have sex with someone who has an STI.

What will my results tell me?

Everlywell STD test results will tell you whether you have chlamydia, gonorrhea, or trichomoniasis, and whether you have been exposed to HIV, hepatitis C or syphilis. As with all Everlywell tests, our at-home STD Test is taken in the privacy of your own home, and shipped to the lab in a prepaid mailer.

You will be notified via email when your easy-to-understand report is ready. If you do have any abnormal results, a representative from our physician network will reach out to you, and you will have the opportunity to ask any questions about your particular case.

For some tests, like chlamydia, gonorrhea, and trichomoniasis, you may also be offered a prescription if deemed necessary, at no extra cost to you. Results are not only easy to understand, but Everlywell also offers suggestions on any next steps you may need to take in your particular case.

Additionally, if you test positive and are interested in treatment, consider online STD prescriptions and treatment via Everlywell's virtual visits offering.
