While sex can cause a urinary tract infection (UTI), a UTI is not a sexually transmitted disease or infection. Most UTIs are caused by a bacterial infection that can be treated with an antibiotic. An STD can be caused by either a bacterium or virus, but infections almost always involve sexual activity. The best way to know if you have a UTI or STD is to talk with a healthcare provider about your symptoms. They can answer your questions and provide guidance on any testing you may need to determine your diagnosis.

Practicing safe sex, which can include barrier methods such as condoms, can reduce the risk of acquiring or transmitting STDs. Vaccines can also help prevent certain STDs.

The CDC recommends that sexually active women under the age of 25 get tested every year for gonorrhea and chlamydia. Annual testing is also recommended for women over 25 who have been sexually active with a new partner or with a partner who has an STD. Men who are sexually active with other men should get tested every year for common STDs such as syphilis, chlamydia, and gonorrhea, and HIV testing should occur more frequently such as every 3-6 months.

A telehealth visit may be right for you if you have been exposed to an STD or have mild symptoms such as:

• Pain or burning when urinating
• Pelvic pain
• Pain during sex
• Itching, redness, or sores around the genitals or mouth (genital warts)
• Unusual discharge from the penis or vagina
• Abnormal vaginal odor

However, a Virtual Care Visit may not be right for you if you have severe symptoms that may indicate a more serious infection. In-person care is recommended if you:

• Are pregnant
• Have a compromised immune system (HIV, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, cancer, transplant, etc.)
• Are experiencing flu-like symptoms (fever greater than 100.4°F or 38°C lasting more than two days, chills, feeling very tired, etc.)

If you are experiencing severe symptoms, we recommend contacting your primary health care provider or visiting a clinic to get help.

Given the immediacy of an on-demand appointment, health insurance processing may not be completed prior to your appointment, and you will likely be notified of your insurance coverage after your consultation. If coverage is insufficient you will be responsible for paying the cash price of up to $79.

Be open and honest with your healthcare provider when sharing details about your sexual history, and be ready to provide the following details during your visit:

• If you’ve been sexually active in the last year
• Whether you have sex with men, women, or both
• How many sexual partners you’ve had in the past 12 months
• If you have anal, oral, or vaginal sex
• Which measures you have taken to protect yourself from STDs

Many major insurance plans are accepted. To confirm if your specific plan is accepted, schedule your visit and enter your insurance information to have a payer eligibility check conducted. Before your scheduled appointment, you will receive an email from our partner, OpenLoop, with more details about your estimated costs and insurance eligibility.

For all other appointments, you will be charged a $25 no-show fee if you are unable to make your appointment without giving at least 24 hours notice.
