Can I Take an Everlywell Test While Pregnant?

Testing in Pregnancy: What to Expect

You will probably spend a lot of time in your pregnancy care provider’s office or clinic, as well as laboratories and ultrasound rooms, if you are pregnant. Women with low-risk, healthy pregnancies can expect to have a minimum of 15-20 routine tests during pregnancy.[1]

The routine tests of pregnancy help to find conditions that could increase your risk of complications.[1] These tests check samples of your blood, urine, and fluid from your vagina, womb, or rectum.[1] Ultrasounds and electronic fetal monitoring (EFM) are two other tests that require machines and skilled technicians. These two types of testing can provide helpful information about [2,3]:

  • The pregnancy’s development, as well as the mom's and the baby’s health
  • The location and position of the baby and the placenta
  • Contractions of the womb, called the uterus, which will help you know whether you are in labor

With today’s busy schedules and more at-home testing available, you may be wondering if Everlywell testing makes more sense for your pregnancy testing needs.

Can I Do At-Home Testing for My Routine Pregnancy Tests?

No, at-home testing is not an option for most of the routine tests recommended during pregnancy.

Some Everlywell tests may not be designed for use during pregnancy because pregnancy naturally alters certain biomarkers. Biomarkers are found in your body. They can be measured and give information about:

  • Your health
  • Disease or your risk of disease
  • Whether or not a treatment is working

Pregnancy care providers monitor some pregnancy tests very carefully because they are important indicators of risk for complications. The biomarker is hemoglobin A1c, “HbA1c,” or “A1c” is one example. It is used to assess your risk of diabetes. Having stable blood sugar levels in the right range is very important for the health of both pregnant women and their babies. Blood sugar levels that are too high can increase your risk of birth defects, preterm delivery, stillbirth, and having a cesarean delivery.[4]

During pregnancy, healthy blood sugar ranges shift to provide enough energy for the growing fetus. Because of these same changes, many women develop a pregnancy-related type of diabetes called gestational diabetes. There are specific ranges for HbA1C in each trimester of pregnancy. Also, there are more sensitive tests for diagnosing gestational diabetes in pregnancy than HbA1C.[5]

While testing your HbA1C with the Everlywell at-home test before trying to get pregnant or postpartum (if you had gestational diabetes) may be helpful, talk with your pregnancy care provider about using at-home HbA1c testing once you are pregnant.

Can Pregnancy Affect At-Home Test Results?

Yes. Hormone levels and other biomarkers measured by Everlwell at-home tests naturally shift during pregnancy. For example, higher levels of cholesterol are normal during pregnancy because your baby needs cholesterol to grow.[6] Everlywell tests are not adjusted for pregnancy ranges. So, if you take the Everlywell at-home cholesterol and lipids test when pregnant, it might tell you that your cholesterol levels are too high.

Pregnancy also alters your thyroid hormone levels.[7] If you took the Everlywell Thyroid Test while pregnant, it might incorrectly tell you that your thyroid hormone levels are too high or too low. Your thyroid health impacts your fertility, so at-home thyroid testing is something to consider if you are planning a pregnancy.

Inflammation and Food Sensitivity Testing in Pregnancy

Pregnancy is a unique challenge for your immune system. When you aren’t pregnant, your immune system’s job is to protect you against what could make you sick, such as infections and viruses. Your body recognizes your growing baby as potentially foreign because half of your baby’s DNA is different from yours. So, your body smartly “turns down” the volume on your immune system during pregnancy to keep your baby safe and healthy. As a result, markers of inflammation, including immunoglobulins, naturally shift in pregnancy.[8]

This shift in the way your immune system works in pregnancy means that tests designed to measure immune system biomarkers, including immunoglobulins, may not give you accurate results if you take them in pregnancy. That is why it is a good idea to take the Everlywell Digestive Health Tests either before pregnancy or after you have delivered.

Some Everlywell Test Results Won’t Be Changed By Your Pregnancy

Having a sexually transmitted infection during pregnancy or at the time of delivery can be harmful for both you and your baby. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that pregnant people be tested for [9]:

  • Gonorrhea and chlamydia at least once
  • Syphilis at least once at the start of pregnancy
  • HIV at least at the first prenatal visit
  • Hepatitis B and C at the first prenatal visit

Everlywell Sexual Health Tests do provide some options for STI testing at home, but you should discuss this with your pregnancy care provider. Because some STIs, such as chlamydia, can have long-term impacts for both mother and baby, repeated testing during your pregnancy is sometimes recommended for higher-risk people.[CDC]

Some Everlywell Tests Are Not Approved For Use in Pregnant Women

Because of the complex changes that occur in bodies during pregnancy, further evaluation of newer testing technologies is needed. At this time, there has not been enough research done for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to approve the use of many at-home tests in pregnant women. Neither the FIT colon cancer test nor the Galleri® Multi-Cancer Detection Test is approved for use by pregnant women. If you have concerns about your risk for cancer, Everlywell suggests you talk with your pregnancy care provider about what testing options are available to you during pregnancy.

Support from Everlywell and Its Virtual Health Providers

So, while your options for which Everlywell tests you can take while pregnant are limited, there are still some tests that could provide helpful information. Pregnancy can be a journey with multiple stages. The preconception and postpartum stages are critical periods in a woman's healthspan. Making sure you are in optimal health before getting pregnant and then screening for cardiac health, thyroid health, and diabetes risk postpartum are two ways Everlywell and its virtual health providers are here to support you on your healthy reproductive journey.
