If you’ve heard about the Everlywell Food Sensitivity Test, you may be wondering what foods it measures, how to use your results and more. Keep reading to learn more about this test and whether it may be right for you.
What is a food sensitivity?
A food sensitivity is not the same as a food allergy or food intolerance. Here’s what these different terms refer to:
Food sensitivity - A food sensitivity may result from a kind of immune reaction that is associated with IgG antibodies. Symptoms related to food sensitivities don’t show up right away after eating the 'troublesome' food but they typically present 24-48 hours later.
Food allergy - A food allergy is an IgE antibody response to specific foods. Symptoms typically present within seconds, minutes or hours after consuming the food. Unlike a food sensitivity, a food allergy can result in a potentially life-threatening response.
Food intolerance - A food intolerance occurs if you are deficient in certain enzymes needed to digest certain kinds of food. Lactose intolerance is a classic example; this form of food intolerance results from a deficiency in lactase, the type of enzyme needed to break down the sugars in milk. Gastrointestinal distress can arise as a result.
What food sensitivities does Everlywell test for?
It’s important to note that Everlywell food sensitivity tests (whether the Food Sensitivity Test or Food Sensitivity Comprehensive Test) don’t directly tell you what food sensitivities you may have. Instead, these tests show you your IgG antibody reactivity level to different foods. These results serve as a list of suspects that can then be used to guide a two-part elimination diet. To actually determine which foods you’re sensitive to, it’s recommended to try the two-part elimination diet. We break down how to do a simple two-part elimination diet in this blog. Spoiler alert: it’s easy.
