What Is Wegovy® (Semaglutide)?

Wegovy® is an injectable prescription drug that is FDA-approved and clinically proven to help with weight loss. [1] The active ingredient in Wegovy® is semaglutide, a glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonist that is more commonly known as a GLP-1 medication. [1-2] Semaglutide was initially approved as a treatment for type 2 diabetes, but studies have found that GLP-1 drugs may also lead to weight loss when used in addition to a reduced calorie diet and increased physical activity. [1] Wegovy® is indicated for adults who are obese or overweight with at least one weight-related health condition, such as type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, or high blood pressure. [1]
