About this test

Vitamin B12 keeps nerves and red blood cells healthy, and the body cannot make it. It comes from animal foods or supplements, so people on plant-based diets, on long-term acid reducers, or with absorption problems are the ones most often checked.

A low level is read with symptoms such as tingling, tiredness, and low mood, and often with folate and a blood count. A high level is often from supplements; an unexplained high level is discussed with a clinician.

Reading your result

B12 falls with low intake (plant-based diets), poor absorption (older age, stomach surgery, some gut conditions), and long-term use of acid reducers or metformin. It rises with supplements and injections, and a high value is rarely meaningful on its own.

Because the symptoms overlap with iron and thyroid causes, B12 is usually checked with folate, ferritin, and a blood count rather than alone. Supplements taken in the days before a draw raise the number, so a clinician reads it with what you take.
