About this test

TSH is the pituitary's signal to the thyroid, and the usual first check of thyroid function. When the thyroid runs slow, TSH tends to rise; when it runs fast, TSH tends to fall.

Because it responds to the thyroid rather than being a thyroid hormone itself, TSH is the usual screen. Free T4 and Free T3 show what the thyroid itself is producing when TSH is out of range, and thyroid antibodies point to an autoimmune cause when present.

Reading your result

TSH moves opposite to the thyroid: it rises when the thyroid runs slow and falls when it runs fast. Illness, some medications, pregnancy, and the time of day can nudge it, and a single mildly out-of-range value is often rechecked before anything else.

Free T4 can add detail when TSH is out of range, while thyroid antibodies can add context when an autoimmune cause is being considered.
