About this test
LH is the pituitary hormone whose mid-cycle surge sets off ovulation, and it drives testosterone production in the testes. Ovulation predictor kits measure the same hormone in urine.
Read with FSH, it is one of several hormones checked in PCOS questions, and a low LH alongside a low testosterone points to the pituitary rather than the testes. Like FSH, it is timed to the cycle and suppressed by hormonal birth control.
Reading your result
LH surges for a day or two mid-cycle and is otherwise low, so the cycle day changes how it is read. It runs high in PCOS relative to FSH, rises after menopause, and is suppressed by hormonal birth control.
In men, LH rises when the testes are underproducing and falls when the pituitary is the cause, which is why it is drawn with testosterone. A very high LH surge mid-cycle is normal and is the reason the cycle day is recorded with the result.
