About this test

Uric acid is a waste product from the breakdown of purines, which come from your own cells and from foods such as red meat, seafood, and beer. When it runs high it can form crystals in joints, the process behind gout.

The level moves with diet, alcohol, weight, hydration, kidney function, and medicines such as diuretics. It is checked for gout questions and kidney stone history, and tracked over time by people who have had a flare.

Reading your result

Uric acid rises with red meat, seafood, alcohol (especially beer), sugary drinks, dehydration, weight gain, and diuretics, and with reduced kidney function. It falls with hydration, weight loss, and medicines prescribed for gout.

Levels can be normal during a flare and high without any symptoms, so a single value is read with your history. Because it moves with hydration and the last few meals, a surprising result is usually repeated before anything changes.
